Katie (Filmhounds Magazine and podcast) Hogan and Liz Slade and return to Flixwatcher to review Katie’s choice Eyes Wide Shut.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) is the final film from Stanley Kubrick. Based on the novella Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler, Kubrick moved the story from 1920s Vienna to 19902 New York. It stars Tom Cruise as Dr. William “Bill” Harford and Nicole Kidman as his wife Alice. One night Bill and Alice discuss their unfulfilled desires and Alice tells him about her fantasy about a naval officer. This conversation triggers a series of events that send Bill into the night and further into a society of secret masked parties and orgies.

Kubrick’s final film is well known for its prolonged shoot and toll it took on the real life marriage of Tom and Nicole. Kubrick died six days after presenting his cut and there is debate over whether this is his definitive cut.

Recommendability scores for Eyes Wide Shut were as mixed as the original reviews when the film was released in 1999. With a runtime of two hours and 39 minutes Eyes Wide Shut scores were low for repeat and engagement and it scores 3.56 overall.
