This is a machine transcript (WhisperX), not typed up by the crew, so expect the odd garbled word, a misheard film title, or a "free" where someone clearly said "three" (we're British, it happens). 00:36:27 [SPEAKER_00]: but this time around, that's the only small thing. [SPEAKER_01]: I need to rewatch that because I was trying to work out when he died. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll keep him in to like, watch documentaries or whatever to see where he actually passed away. [SPEAKER_01]: But there were some scenes at the end where he stood in front of Maximus in the jail cell and was like, that's not Oliver Reed. [SPEAKER_01]: But in the year 2000, it wasn't that apparent, I guess. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a really good job at that time. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a bit like, we're a bit like, oh, they managed to like put him in another scene using computers. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't even know he was dead at that point. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know he died until like, way after the film came out.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's so many great scenes between Poxmo and Maximus and the way in which he's sort of very subtly changing his nature in the background of the film to the point where he wants to free Maximus and his soldiers when the shit hits the fan. [SPEAKER_02]: And there's that really great line, Poxmo, are you in danger of becoming a good man? [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, ah!
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I love that too. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, the fact that the film has enough space and enough smarts to give even a mini-arc to a character like that, it just, again, adds to the special nature of the overall thing for me. [SPEAKER_02]: That's yourself, Alan. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a very, like, rousing film, but... [SPEAKER_00]: I kind of wonder whether rewatching it it would be any different but no it's still got those same beats in it and it still has that same emotional power and I do think that Russell Crowe in this is probably at his best in it so yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I had seen L.A. [SPEAKER_01]: Confidential, and I was like, it's a great film, lovely. [SPEAKER_01]: But this is like, this is a star maker.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is like, are there that many star maker films at the moment where you're just like, holy shit, who's this guy? [SPEAKER_01]: He needs to be in everything. [SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't lived up to the heights of this. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Hans Zimmer's overall score has lived to the heights of this. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Ridley Scott has lived to the heights of this. [SPEAKER_02]: So this is like a... Yeah, this is the mountain top four for so many people. [SPEAKER_02]: I will say, Master and Commander comes close. [SPEAKER_02]: I love that film. [SPEAKER_02]: I think Russell Crowe is fantastic in that movie. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, gladiator is still one. [SPEAKER_03]: I was going to go have it. [SPEAKER_03]: Is it gladiator at sea?
00:38:34 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm the same. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm kind of like, eh. [SPEAKER_02]: Trust me on this. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, okay, here's the thing that's going to tell you guys on this. [SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, you know, I've talked about leadership, master commander, [SPEAKER_02]: it gets close to maximum levels of leadership. [SPEAKER_02]: And I did not say that lately. [SPEAKER_03]: I was going to say, Amon, don't play with me. [SPEAKER_02]: I do not say that lightly. [SPEAKER_02]: That character is great. [SPEAKER_02]: Or be as fantastic. [SPEAKER_02]: Watch that movie. [SPEAKER_01]: You'll love it. [SPEAKER_00]: Add into my watch list. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to give this a 4.9. [SPEAKER_01]: Kobi, don't let me come over there and slap you. [SPEAKER_01]: Repeat viewing score. [SPEAKER_01]: Come on. [SPEAKER_01]: Five. [SPEAKER_01]: Has it been the 25th anniversary yet?
[SPEAKER_01]: The 25th anniversary was this year, no? [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It came out in 2025. [SPEAKER_01]: So I would have been... [SPEAKER_03]: What month did it come out? [SPEAKER_03]: It says May I think. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's been 25 years of this film. [SPEAKER_01]: Wow. [SPEAKER_01]: Which I hate when I realise things like that.
[SPEAKER_02]: This film obviously the beginning is sensational and has one of the best battle scenes of all time but [SPEAKER_02]: this is a film that could come on on like a channel three four whatever I have you and any point in the film be like yo glad it is on cancel my day I'm watching the right now it has that hold on over me that I just I have to watch it and it's but I mean at the very least I have to watch up to the Colosseum scene because that
[SPEAKER_02]: is the peak of the movie for me, not that the rest of the movie is bad, but that is the absolute zenith of the movie in terms of just the emotional power, everything coming together, everything coalescing. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll have to rewatch it up until at least that point, but it's a five for me on of you watchability. [SPEAKER_03]: It's a five for me. [SPEAKER_03]: I often think if I could really have the data on how many times I've watched this film, I'd really like to know. [SPEAKER_03]: True.
00:40:28 [SPEAKER_03]: It's on a little printout sheet, just how many times over the years I've watched it. [SPEAKER_01]: A dot matrix printout. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I would really love to know that. [SPEAKER_03]: It's incredible. [SPEAKER_03]: Every single time I watch it, I feel like it's the first time I've watched it. [SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, it's a great story. [SPEAKER_03]: It is the story of a powerful man versus the power of a good man. [SPEAKER_03]: And that never gets old. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, boss, Shay. [SPEAKER_01]: Boss. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Helen. [SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't need to watch this for this. [SPEAKER_00]: I watched it fairly recently but I did re-watch it because it's awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: Even with its length there's just so much going on and I happened to put it on to re-watch and Reese, who never really watches any films with me, sat down on the sofa [SPEAKER_01]: So this is Helen's husband who's, has he watched Jurassic Park yet? [SPEAKER_01]: No, he watched it with you, but he was like, playing on his phone, wasn't he? [SPEAKER_00]: He just wasn't really into it. [SPEAKER_00]: But for this, he was like, oh, Gladiator, great.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I'm going to have to give it a five. [SPEAKER_00]: I've seen it lots. [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, the cinema, good on DVD. [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I've watched it against kind of sporadically. [SPEAKER_00]: Just one of those films, you're like, oh, I just fancy watching Gladiator. [SPEAKER_02]: Kind of to say I'm so jealous that you guys saw it at the cinema at the time.
[SPEAKER_02]: I would have loved to have been old enough to understand the gravity of what I was watching and to feel the impact of that first time at the time. [SPEAKER_02]: I would have lost my mind like this. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm very jealous.
00:42:05 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to go for 4.1 here, repeat viewing score. [SPEAKER_01]: I've not seen it as many times you guys, maybe once every, like I said, 25 years, maybe once every four or five years I've watched it. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's boosted up by the fact that, like I said, the score is something that just accompanies me on so many things. [SPEAKER_01]: As you surfed first by the Les Mis soundtrack. [SPEAKER_02]: Really? [SPEAKER_02]: Of all the things that you surfed? Honestly. [SPEAKER_01]: And then as you surfed then by the Hamilton soundtrack in terms of like... [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I understand.
[SPEAKER_01]: We've had Les Mis on here since. [SPEAKER_01]: And so Les Mis, we did a joint recording, Les Mis and Cats. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, ah, Les Mis is going to smash it. [SPEAKER_01]: But after watching Les Mis on the small screen, I was like, why is this film exactly?
[SPEAKER_01]: I still love the score. [SPEAKER_01]: And I still love the soundtracks as they miss, but they just, but yeah, this score is phenomenal. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's in the hundreds of times listening to the gladiator score for me. [SPEAKER_01]: So that bolsters up from the repeat viewing score from where it would be. [SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a favorite track from the score? [SPEAKER_01]: It's battle because that's where I'd make sure I get to the end of before I went into start my races or whatever it would be battle. [SPEAKER_01]: But I'm looking right now. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking at Spotify and seeing how many plays [SPEAKER_01]: each of the songs are and I'm really surprised that Sabato has got 33 million plays now we're free he's got 319 million plays so like 10 times as many yeah that doesn't surprise me so you've got Elysium on the hymn and now we're free all have into the hundreds of millions of plays which is yeah but yeah I mean yeah that doesn't surprise me like now we are free like
[SPEAKER_02]: Hans Zimmer's music for this has become so legendary that it's transcended the movie that it's in. [SPEAKER_02]: You hear Now We Are Free in so many different contexts. [SPEAKER_02]: I've heard so many different remixes and so many people have sampled it and whatnot. [SPEAKER_02]: I get that it has that amount of plays on Spotify. [SPEAKER_02]: For me, Barber and Horde is the one but like the battle is a really great track and again I mentioned the musical storytelling. [SPEAKER_02]: The entire story of that battle you can just [SPEAKER_02]: hear and feel it through the music like I just just hearing it in my head now it's like I'm back there the way in which that track ends as well it's just so beautiful because that's when like the battle is won and Max was just kind of like looking over the battlefield he's like brother victor and the calm the peaceful calm that descends
00:44:30 [SPEAKER_02]: on the track matches the peaceful calm that is ascending on the field of battle. [SPEAKER_02]: It's so beautifully done. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Hans was on another level with that one and it made sense. [SPEAKER_02]: I was lucky enough to interview him before Gareth 2 came out. [SPEAKER_02]: And at that point it had been revealed that Hansen was not coming back from Gareth 2. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, what? [SPEAKER_03]: What's going on? [SPEAKER_03]: He read the script.
[SPEAKER_02]: But he was like, gladiator. [SPEAKER_02]: That has a special place in people's hearts. [SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like I'd just be repeating myself and I wouldn't be able to match essentially what I've done with gladiator. [SPEAKER_02]: And I fear he might have been right because it's a really, this is my favorite school of all time. [SPEAKER_02]: And I do not sit at that level. [SPEAKER_01]: I know a few composers who don't like his factory, I can't remember what it's called, the way he does things. [SPEAKER_01]: I know a few composers that do it the same way, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: We're probably thinking about the same person across the spider verse. [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm like, you know, he's produced some amazing composers like Ramin Jawadi, he's one of my favourite composers now. [SPEAKER_01]: He went through the Hans Zimmer School of Rock. [SPEAKER_01]: And there's a lot of other people who come out and Ramin Jawadi is like, [SPEAKER_01]: I see this guy play guitar and I'm like, dude, what the fuck you don't know what you're doing. [SPEAKER_01]: And Dennis plays the solo piano on some scenes in Game of Thrones. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just like melting. [SPEAKER_01]: So I can understand it's not this classic way that John Williams just like writes every single note himself and does everything himself, but he's got a way of doing things and it works and it works and it can work really well.
[SPEAKER_02]: I agree like I will say you can always tell the difference between a Hans and the score where he's really interested and into it and experimenting and trying something different and a Hans and the score when that is not necessarily the case. [SPEAKER_02]: It's found out almost. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah when it comes to the person that we're talking about, can we name him? [SPEAKER_02]: I'll name him Daniel Pemberton who is a fantastic composer, one of my favorites working today. [SPEAKER_02]: I admire him so much because it feels like he gives his everything to every score that he does and he's always trying to be different, he's always trying to be unique and I know that he does it himself all the time. [SPEAKER_02]: And in a world where that's not always the case for a lot of the big composers working today, you really do have to admire that.
00:46:45 [SPEAKER_01]: Small Screen Score. [SPEAKER_01]: This is where I feel it's going to falter in a, what's that film? [SPEAKER_01]: Brazil, San Brazil. [SPEAKER_00]: You talk about City of God again? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, City of God, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: City of God was scoring high, but then the Small Screen Score killed it. [SPEAKER_01]: So where are we? [SPEAKER_01]: I'm on Small Screen Score. [SPEAKER_01]: Gladator. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm out of five. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh really? [SPEAKER_02]: I have to say. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm out of five because I've been watched this so many times. [SPEAKER_02]: the emotional power is still there every time man it feels none of that is lost i've watched it with big audiences like there's been some reruns at cinemas and i've watched it at home there's no drop-off to me like i still feel like i've gotten a full cinematic meal every time the credits roll on this film no matter where i'm watching it
[SPEAKER_02]: because it's that special to me. [SPEAKER_02]: So for me, I have to say it's a five.
[SPEAKER_03]: Whatever is just Blogue 5, I take a little bit off because I have not been able to see it in the cinema. [SPEAKER_03]: And then also potentially some of the CGI and the graphics from 2000s may not look as great in that transition. [SPEAKER_03]: But if I love this film so much and have never seen it in the cinema, that speaks volumes. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel that this is definitely a Prince Charles cinema, should it always be alive and kicking as an entity. [SPEAKER_01]: This is something you should get definitely to cinema and watch it with other people. [SPEAKER_01]: Helen. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, small screen. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean... [SPEAKER_00]: I enjoyed seeing it in the cinema it was great fun it was 25 years ago so like it was a long time and I've not seen it in the cinema since but yeah it feels like maybe they missed a trick with not having an anniversary release maybe we'll get one yeah that's one surprise I'm like 30th or something like that I don't know I feel like a lot of people will have wanted to have seen it who maybe missed out seeing it 25 years ago especially like when Gladiator 2 came out as well there's a lot of people who
[SPEAKER_00]: I've probably seen Gladiator on DVD, who would have liked to have seen it on the big screen. [SPEAKER_00]: So, who knows? [SPEAKER_00]: I could even give it 4.5, I think, for small screen. [SPEAKER_02]: I went to Gladiator at the Wallabot Hall a few months ago. [SPEAKER_02]: That was a special, special experience. [SPEAKER_02]: The orchestra did a fantastic job. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to go for a four here, because when I saw it with my, like say, live in a house with, I can't remember if it was nine or 10 guys that year, but we all went and it was just mayhem, like I said, after we left the screening. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was such a good fun experience. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's probably why I haven't seen it as many times since, because, you know, when you're, when your cinematic experience kind of isn't, it's indelibly printed in, without film with you.
00:49:41 [SPEAKER_01]: So I've not seen six cents since it came out, because I had such a good time, again, with some of the similar group of mates at school, at university. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's still, it is good. [SPEAKER_01]: It is good. [SPEAKER_01]: I sometimes feel I'm beating myself up unnecessarily because some of my favourite films, I've never seen Pulp Fiction in the cinema, for example. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's still, that's one of my top two favourite films ever. [SPEAKER_01]: I've never seen Ferris Buell's Day Off in the cinema. [SPEAKER_01]: So maybe I've just been unnecessarily harsh, but it was such a great fun experience in the cinema that I feel like, yeah, I want to relive that as much as possible. [SPEAKER_02]: What's your other favourite film, Kirby?
[SPEAKER_01]: So Ferris Buell's Day Off and Pulp Fiction, the ones I tend to say. [SPEAKER_01]: Of recent years, [SPEAKER_01]: A spider-verse film is probably in there in the top three, certainly five. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's definitely, you know, I will say as many times as cinema as I possibly can when they come out. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 4.1, engagement score. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm on. [SPEAKER_02]: This is gonna shock you, Kobi, but I'm gonna go with five! [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: How can you turn the film off once you see Maximus being showered at love by his men in that opening battle and having that great conversation with Quintus, where Quintus is like, mentioned no one there conquered. [SPEAKER_02]: And Maximus is like, would you, Quintus? [SPEAKER_02]: Would I? [SPEAKER_02]: And then the battle starts.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, [SPEAKER_02]: Tell me at what point in this film do you send this film off? [SPEAKER_01]: It's such a cool line actually. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's it on this rewatch. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Boo Quintus. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, God. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he came through a guest in the end a little bit, but I was like, you know, a little bit too late, dude. [SPEAKER_02]: Snakey. [SPEAKER_02]: He showed just a little bit of metal. [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe my family would still be alive, you know? [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Sharon, you're engaged with score. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to zag here and now five.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: I, there's honestly no point in this film that I could turn it off once I start watching it. [SPEAKER_03]: Every minute of it is a point of entry. [SPEAKER_03]: You can watch it anytime. [SPEAKER_03]: I think I've said enough about how much I love this film, but yeah, it's a five. [SPEAKER_03]: I have never yet really successfully stopped watching it in like once I've started it at any point. [SPEAKER_01]: Helen. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I've got like a few notes, but one of the notes is there's a sword catch on a horse. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes! [SPEAKER_02]: I can't believe I've mentioned this. [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, Helen. [SPEAKER_02]: Please continue.
00:51:56 [SPEAKER_00]: And there's moments like that and you're just like, the cinema. [SPEAKER_00]: It's amazing. [SPEAKER_00]: It's incredible. [SPEAKER_01]: It is generally just cool AF this film, isn't it? [SPEAKER_01]: Like all the way through as well. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just, it's just great. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was going to go a little bit lower, but then what you were saying, Cheyenne, then about like how, you know, you can't switch it off and once you kind of started it. [SPEAKER_00]: Like there is just something about it, like everything, the pacing, the character drivenness, the performances, everything all together just works so well that it is just really engaging. [SPEAKER_00]: Even if I've like seen it before, I was still really invested. [SPEAKER_00]: So you know what, I'll give it a five as well, feeling, feeling in a good mood.
[SPEAKER_01]: I might give this my first five of the round. [SPEAKER_01]: Yay! [SPEAKER_02]: Wonderful. [SPEAKER_02]: One of us. [SPEAKER_02]: One of us. [SPEAKER_01]: Like you say, I think there's... [SPEAKER_01]: This would have been a proper film, not film fourth in, but if, like you say, you turn on TV and it's on. [SPEAKER_01]: But something that doesn't happen in my life anymore because I've literally never put on linear TV until... No, the last time it did was when Neighbours finished, like, three years ago. [SPEAKER_01]: But since then I've not watched TV at the same time as anyone else, apart from sports matches. [SPEAKER_01]: That gives us an overall score of 4.84688. [SPEAKER_01]: Did you have a look at the score, Helen? [SPEAKER_00]: I can't do it by points, so I need to see if I can find it quickly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, OK. [SPEAKER_01]: There you go. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Our website is not rendering properly at the moment, so we'll get that sorted. [SPEAKER_01]: But you can go to our website when it's properly sorted, hopefully by the time you hear this, and click on the scoreboard in the heading. [SPEAKER_01]: And our current highest scoring film, I can't sort by it at the moment. [SPEAKER_00]: No! [SPEAKER_00]: Oh here we go. [SPEAKER_00]: So dramatic moment. [SPEAKER_00]: The current highest scoring film is Fight Club and that has a score of 4.8
[SPEAKER_00]: 0, 6, 2, 5. [SPEAKER_01]: So glad it is the current high score now. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes! [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I'm talking about. [SPEAKER_01]: Maximus. [SPEAKER_01]: Love this for us. [SPEAKER_02]: Love this for me. [SPEAKER_02]: Well deserved. [SPEAKER_02]: How though? [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I didn't give it that many. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, probably. How? [SPEAKER_02]: I mean I could happily talk for the next hour and answer the question before you could be.
00:54:17 [SPEAKER_00]: We also had some reviews over on Instagram as well for Gladiator. [SPEAKER_02]: So we had her says super quick. [SPEAKER_02]: So Lee Thomas says four stars. [SPEAKER_02]: I was entertained.
