Bethany and Mel from Movement is Life, a podcast series from Intelligent Health, return to Flixwatcher to review Bethany’s choice Bird Box.

Bird Box is a 2018 post-apocalyptic thriller, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman and directed by Susanne (The Night Manager) Bier.

Sandra Bullock stars as Malorie, who we meet at the start of the film blindfolding two young children as they get into a boat and telling them they will die if they remove the blindfolds. Cut to five years earlier and an unknown presence is causing people who have been exposed to it to commit suicide in horrific ways.

A very pregnant Malorie takes refuge in a house with a group of disparate characters including a compassionate passer by Tom (Trevante Rhodes), a grumpy and bitter Douglas (John Malkovich), a unassuming elder woman Cheryl (Jacki Weaver) and another pregnant woman Olympia (Danielle Macdonald). The group try to stay alive but tensions run high as supplies dwindle and unpredictable strangers are let into the house.
Somewhat unfairly called inferior to A Quiet Place – they both came out in 2018 but Bird Box’s novel came out in 2014 – they do have similarities in the set up both are different in tone and post-apocalyptic terror. Bird Box is pretty bleak, making it hard to rate highly on recommendability or repeat viewing, however it still manages to score 3.83 overall.
