Em (Verbal Diorama) and Emma Turner (The Independent Podcast Awards) join Flixwatcher to review Em’s choice Princess Mononoke.
Princess Mononoke (1997) is the 10th Studio Ghibli animation by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. Based on Japanese folklore, it follows the journey of the last Emishi Prince, Ashitaka, and his attempts to make peace between the humans and the spirit world. When Ashitaka kills a demon boar his arm becomes infected and will ultimately kill him, he is exiled. On his journey he encounters the powerful goddess San, the human daughter of the wolf Moro.
Princess Mononoke is largely considered one of Miyazaki’s masterpieces, it took 16 years to design and three years to produce. It is also very dark and disturbing, despite being a Studio Ghilbi it is not suitable for very young children.
Recommendability scores for Princess Mononoke were unsurprisingly very high, however its two hour and 13 minutes runtime scores for repeat viewing were a little lower to give an impressive overall rating of 4.05.
